Katy Pyle is a lesbian choreographer challenging ballet by placing her own body, and her collaborators’ bodies, within a form in which they inherently fail. Pyle founded Ballez in 2011, and has created two large scale, story Ballez performances: “The Firebird, a Ballez” at Danspace Project in 2013, and “Sleeping Beauty & the Beast,” at La Mama in 2016. Ballez has also performed at Brooklyn Museum, American Realness, CATCH, AUNTS, Movement Research and over several years of residency at Brooklyn Arts Exchange. She has also taught “Adult Ballez” at Brooklyn Arts Exchange, Movement Research, New York University, the Allied Media Conference, CounterPULSE, University Musical Society, Irreverent Dance in London, Parsons, Beyond Tolerance Youth Conference, Yale, Wayne State, and Sarah Lawrence. As a performer/creator, she has worked with Ivy Baldwin, Faye Driscoll, John Jasperse, Karinne Keithley Syers, Xavier Le Roy, Jennifer Monson, Anna Sperber, Katie Workum, and Young Jean Lee Theater Company, among others. She has received creative support from Brooklyn Arts Council, Brooklyn Arts Exchange (BAX), Dragon’s Egg, the Jerome Foundation, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Mertz Gilmore,Mount Tremper Arts, and Rockbridge Artist’s Exchange.
