For shoe salesman and aspiring personal trainer, Dennis Toledo, a lifetime of trouble assumes a new intensity after a bad tour in Iraq. Though he’s managed to anesthetize the enduring wounds of that service with prescription drug abuse, when he’s arrested on a domestic violence charge and sentenced to Brooklyn Treatment Court, he’s forced to find new ways to handle his volatile tangle of mixed emotions. Further upheaval with his wife leaves him perched on the edge of recovery with an all-consuming drive to win full custody of his six year old daughter.

This event is part of a performance series from 4:00pm- 6:00pm, followed by a short discussion.
Start time is approximate.

Christina Masciotti writes about seemingly unremarkable characters on unholy paths of redemption. Line by line, she features the avant-garde accidents of everyday speech, the unintentional misspeaking, the stirring individuality, as well as the sometimes strange and unexpected beauty that emerges from the wreckage. In the process, she hopes to open up a vein of feeling for people who are often bluntly sealed off from our daily lives, and wholly out of keeping with how we see ourselves. Masciotti’s recent production, Social Security, was named one of the Top Ten Plays of 2015 by Helen Shaw, and received an honorable mention from The Kilroys. The original scripts for her earlier work, Adult (2014) and Vision Disturbance (2010) have been selected for preservation in the permanent archives of the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. Vision Disturbance was also one of Time Out New York’s Top Ten Plays of 2010.Masciotti’s work has been published by Broadway Play Publishing, Smith and Kraus, and Applause Theater and Cinema Books: The Best Women’s Stage Monologues of 2014, Best Contemporary Monologues for Women (2014), and The Best Women’s Stage Monologues of 2016. Masciotti is currently a 2016 Guggenheim Fellow in Drama and Performance.

Upcoming: World Premiere, June 1-18, 2017, Abrons Arts Center
